Bruce's Lawn Care Schedule

January- Apply lime. Lime regulates your soil's pH. If your yard is weedy, patchy in spots, or turning yellow, it may be a sign that the pH is off. One of the primary methods of correcting these problems is to add lime to your yard to restore depleted nutrients and repair the damage. We stock the following:

  • Pellet lime- 40 lb bag, covers 1,000 square feet/bag
  • Solucal lime- 50 lb bag, covers 10,000 square feet/bag

Also, remove any leaves left from Fall, edge mulch beds, service mowers, and handheld equipment, and sharpen mower blades.

February- Mid-month, apply a slow-release Spring fertilizer or apply a slow release fertilizer with pre-emergent crabgrass preventer at the end of the month. Optional: split application of pre-emergent in 6-7 weeks.

March- Depending on weather, apply a pre-emergent Spring weed control- liquid or granular form.

April- Apply Weed & Feed, or a liquid weed control, depending on how well your Spring pre-emergent weed control did. Towards the end of the month, apply a grub control (Granular Seven works well).

May- Spread 1/2 of the recommended amount of slow-release fertilizer for an extra boost.

June- Spot spray weeds, resharpen mower blades.

July- Stay off fescue grass as much as possible and mow at least at a 4" height. Fescue grass does not like hot temperatures. Put out an application of grub control if needed.

August- Total spray out of all weeds and/or Bermuda grass.

September- Mid-month through Thanksgiving:

  • Overseed- 3-5 lbs seed per 1,000 square feet
  • New Lawn- 6-10 lbs seed per 1,000 square feet

Use Starter slow-release fertilizer is you are applying seed. If not, apply Fall slow-release fertilizer. If you have not applied lime this year, you can do this now.

October- Same schedule as September

November- Thanksgiving through the beginning of January- Apply slow-release winterize fertilizer. Make sure lime has been applied for the year. Keep off newly seeded grass.

December- Remove any fallen leaves.

*Tips*

  • Keep sharp mower blades at all times
  • Mow in different directions
  • Mow fescue at 3.5"
  • Stay off grass during hot and dry conditions
  • Know the square footage of your lawn
  • Use slow-release products on your lawn and shrubs
  • More fertilizer is not always better-- timing and quality of the product is very important

These are all recommended suggestions for your yard. You can do as much or as little as you want, depending on the quality of your yard.
